We have many exciting activities for this year's reenactment. Check out our event schedule for all of the activities that will be going on during the reenactment weekend.

While in the area, be sure to visit the new Resaca Battlefield Historic Site that is open now on weeekends. This important battlefield is located just off of I-75 at Exit 320 just miles from the reenactment site. The new battlefield park features hiking trails and interpretive markers. A new visitor center will also be opening soon.

Also while in the area, be sure to visit the Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site just yards from downtown Resaca. This historic fort was part of the defensive earthworks guarding the river and town of Resaca during the 1864 battle. After the battle, it was occupied by Federal troops.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • No Boy Scout camping on-site this year. Two campgrounds close to the reenactment site will take Boy Scout camping: (1) Calhoun A-OK Campground, 706-629-7511, only 10 minutes from the reenactment, and (2) Salacoa Creek Park, 706-629-3490, only 25 minutes from the reenactment.

  • The Federal reenactor camp has been expanded and improved for camping and vehicle unloading/loading access.

  • To ensure the safety of all visitors, there will be no tours at the reenactment site during the reenactment weekend that are not hosted by either the Georgia Division Reenactors Association or the Battle of Resaca Reenactment, Inc.

  • No public solicitation or selling of goods will be allowed except by pre-registered Sutlers and Vendors.

  • This is a public event, and as such by your attendance, you agree that photographs from this event, which might include you, are subject to use by the event and their hosts for marketing of the event.

  • No drones will be allowed on site unless pre-approved by the Event Staff.

  • The main reenactor parking is at the same location for your convenience and for a much shorter walk to camp. A trail head at the back of this area leads to the CS campaign camp. A foot bridge over the creek connects the campaigner area with the static CS camp, allowing easier access to the sutlers.

  • Due to liability concerns, the Resaca Event Staff will not allow reenactors OR the public the personal use of any type of recreational four-wheelers, off road motorcycles, golf carts or similar type vehicles to operate on site. Transportation will be provided to and from the spectator and handicapped parking areas.

  • Due to troop camp locations, no MODERN CAMPING will be available for RV vehicles, campers or modern tentage, etc. Modern camping is available at the KOA Campground (10 minutes away) located just off I-75 (Exit 315 - Red Bud Road) at 2523 Red Bud Road N.E. The phone number is: 706-629-7511.

  • No non-reenactors, except for medical emergency personnel, will be permitted past the spectator line during the battles.

Resaca Reenactment Site Update

To avoid any rumors concerning the old historic Chitwood Farm and the location of the annual Battle of Resaca Reenactment location, here are the facts.

In 2009, pending possible foreclosure of the 488 acre site, the bank sold the property to the Trust for Public Land. The Trust for Public Land’s mission is to buy historic and endangered properties to protect them from future development and to establish a Conservation Easement to protect the land for perpetuity. Once this is in place, the Trust for Public Land sells the protected property to which the Conservation Easement remains in place no matter who the future owner is.

In 2010, Gordon County purchased the Conservation Easement making them the chief agency governing the very restrictive use of the land in perpetuity. As part of the agreement, the annual reenactment is also protected within the document. The Gordon County Historic Preservation Commission serves the county as the over-site committee. The Friends of Resaca Battlefield, Inc. serves as advisors.

In November of 2019, the Trust for Public Land placed the entire site up for auction. The result was that the property was purchased back by one of the family members who lost it. The Battle of Resaca Reenactment, Inc. and the Georgia Division Reenactors Association, Inc. both contributed funds to the family for the purchase.

In closing, the annual Battle of Resaca Reenactment is protected as part of the permanent Conservation Easement.
